High school student Starla Grady (Jane McGregor), the head cheerleader and reigning pageant queen of the quaint town of Splendora, Texas, dreams of becoming a news anchor. As part of her French studies, she reluctantly hosts an exchange student, an orphan named Genevieve Le Plouff (Piper Perabo). Starla's decision to partake in the exchange program stems from poor grades in French, hoping her new roommate will help boost her performance.
In stark contrast, Doreen Gilmore (Christen Coppen) is a passionate activist despised by many for her opposition to the superficial beauty standards perpetuated by their peers. Eager to win the beauty pageant, Starla announces her exchange student hosting to regain her standing, especially after a rival contestant, Ashley, steals her much-coveted "God is everything" answer.
Initially, Genevieve is enamored with Starla's charm and popularity. At school, Ed Mitchell (Trent Ford), a budding photographer for the school newspaper, becomes Genevieve's first ally.
