High school student Starla Grady (Jane McGregor), the head cheerleader and reigning pageant queen of the quaint town of Splendora, Texas, dreams of becoming a news anchor. As part of her French studies, she reluctantly hosts an exchange student, an orphan named Genevieve Le Plouff (Piper Perabo). Starla’s decision to partake in the exchange program stems from poor grades in French, hoping her new roommate will help boost her performance.
In stark contrast, Doreen Gilmore (Christen Coppen) is a passionate activist despised by many for her opposition to the superficial beauty standards perpetuated by their peers. Eager to win the beauty pageant, Starla announces her exchange student hosting to regain her standing, especially after a rival contestant, Ashley, steals her much-coveted “God is everything” answer.
Initially, Genevieve is enamored with Starla’s charm and popularity. In a show of camaraderie, Starla hosts a grand welcome for Genevieve, showcasing her dreams of becoming a news anchor and sharing her meticulously crafted checklist for success. She proudly reveals her audition video that she produced at a professional news studio, further impressing Genevieve.
At school, Ed Mitchell (Trent Ford), a budding photographer for the school newspaper, becomes Genevieve’s first ally. However, as Genevieve gains affection from Starla’s family—her parents, Bootsie (Julie White) and Arnie Grady (Brandon Smith), as well as friends Ashley (Alexandra Adi) and Tanner Jennings (Nicki Aycox)—she begins to encroach upon Starla’s territory.
Despite Starla’s anger when Ed decides to feature Genevieve in a full spread, sidelining her, she is forced to uphold her beauty pageant pledge to support “community.” Genevieve’s rise in popularity is meteoric as she acquires a following, even recording a tape of Starla making derogatory comments about her peers, causing additional rifts.
When an unexpected failing grade in French forces Starla to quit the cheerleading squad—after Genevieve misguides her study efforts—Starla’s life begins to unravel as Genevieve effortlessly steps into her position as the new cheerleading darling. The dynamic shifts dramatically, with Genevieve flourishing while Starla’s reputation plummets.
Ultimately, Starla discovers that Genevieve has schemed against her, but the lack of evidence prevents her from proving it. Genevieve capitalizes on Starla’s misfortune by seducing Kyle, Starla’s boyfriend, causing tensions to escalate between the two. In this twisted rivalry, Genevieve claims the title of homecoming queen and even steals Starla’s potential scholarship opportunity to become a news anchor.
A scathing betrayal occurs when Genevieve returns a tape of French lessons to Starla, but it turns out to contain embarrassing recordings of Starla herself disparaging others. As Starla faces serious consequences for false accusations—being framed for carrying a knife and drug use—Genevieve manipulates the situation further by posing as Starla’s parents to keep her in jail over the weekend.
However, Starla, aided by Ed and her younger brother Randolph (Jesse James), eventually gathers the evidence to confront Genevieve, who is unmasked as Clarissa Fogelsey, a former classmate from elementary school seeking revenge for a long-ago humiliation.
With Genevieve’s true identity revealed, she abandons her plans and flees the town in disgrace. Starla regains her place among her peers, albeit without fulfilling her ambitions of journalism or accolades, she emerges from the chaos as a transformed individual. In a surprising turn of events, she begins a new romance with Ed after parting ways with Kyle. Meanwhile, Genevieve arrives in Paris, greeted by her new adoptive family, embodying her new life under false pretenses.
