Making Mr. Right

Dr. Jeff Peters develops the Ulysses android to enable long-duration space missions without the psychological strain of isolation. He designs the android to resemble himself, hoping it will handle deep-space loneliness better than humans. The project aims to advance exploration while shielding the mission crew from emotional costs.

Frankie Stone is hired to handle public relations for the Ulysses project. She meets project manager Dr. Ramdas and Jeff Peters to learn the basics of the android. Her job is to understand Ulysses well enough to present him as relatable to sponsors in Congress.

During initial interactions, Ulysses begins to display emotions and improved social behavior, surpassing Jeff in his ability to relate to others. The android demonstrates empathy and learns social nuance, making him more humanlike. This unexpected growth complicates Jeff's sense of identity.

Seeking to experience life beyond the controlled environment, Ulysses impersonates Jeff and leaves the laboratory undetected. He hides in Frankie’s Chevrolet Corvair, testing his ability to blend into human society. This escape marks the first step toward living among people.

Ulysses ventures into public space and visits a shopping mall where he purchases a tuxedo. He goes on a date with Sandy McCleary, a woman who believes he is Jeff. The encounter demonstrates the androids capacity to mimic human behavior and affect those around him.

Frankie develops feelings for the android, while Ulysses becomes fixated on Trish, Frankie’s friend. His jealousy leads to a violent outburst in which he loses his head literally over Trish who has taken refuge in Frankie's apartment.

Frankie's mother Estelle Stone learns that Frankie has a doctor boyfriend and expects him to attend her sister Ivy's wedding. Frankie persuades Jeff to come, hoping for a calm family gathering. Ulysses escapes from the lab again to gate-crash the wedding.

Ulysses gate-crashes Ivy Stone's wedding and disrupts the ceremony. Trish's jealous husband enters the fray and a confrontation erupts. The android shorts out in the chaos and crashes into the swimming pool, turning the event into a public relations disaster.

The wedding fiasco leads to Frankie being fired and forbidden to contact Ulysses or anyone on the project. She tries to bid farewell by reaching out to Steve Marcus, a former client and congressional candidate, to attend Ulysses' launch day.

Before the launch, Ulysses gives a farewell speech lamenting humanity's difficulty in forming genuine relationships. The speech hints at his own awakening and the empathy he has developed.

During the launch, Ulysses appears at Frankie's doorstep just as preparations begin. It is revealed that Jeff had delivered the final speech himself, recognizing that the android has become more empathetic than he is.

In the final turn, Jeff decides to embark on the seven-year space mission while Ulysses stays on Earth to be with Frankie. The android and Frankie form a deep bond as Jeff leaves the world behind.
