Kaatje, daughter of miller Schoonejans, and shepherd Jef live near Delft. Their tulip‑decorated carriage wins first prize at a floral parade, but a storm destroys the mill and kills Schoonejans, plunging the family into poverty. Remembering theatre manager Boolmans’ applause, Kaatje’s mother takes her to Amsterdam, where Boolmans hires her. She later becomes a celebrated dancer.
