Mario Buongiovanni, a university student, takes on a string of odd jobs—selling encyclopedias, singing in nightclubs, guiding tours—to fund his studies. He later becomes a science teacher at a women’s college, where he meets Lisa, the daughter of a wealthy Lombard industrialist, and falls in love. However, Lisa’s father already intends her to marry a rich suitor.
