Dora, rushing to join them, makes the perilous choice to board the train and stay with her husband and child, even as the fear of separation gnaws at her resolve. Once inside the camp, the brutal realities of life behind barbed wire begin to unfold: men and women are separated, and the grim routines of imprisonment take hold.

Throughout the camp’s dark days, Guido refuses to expose the grim truth to his son. Instead, he crafts an elaborate, protective narrative, presenting the camp as a complicated game where points accumulate toward a single, extraordinary prize: a tank. He fills Giosuè’s days with tasks that reward stillness, discipline, and quiet resilience—while covertly slipping messages to Dora through the camp’s loudspeakers. The camp is liberated by a U.S. Army unit, and a young Giosuè emerges from hiding, thrilled to see the arrival of a tank and to imagine the victory his father promised.
