In the ancient citadel of Jerusalem, the weight of an empire presses down on a people whose very soul is bound to stone and scripture. The city’s towering Temple, once a symbol of unity, now stands amid a growing chasm between those who cooperate with the occupying power and those who cling to a fierce vision of freedom. At the heart of the unrest is Ben Batich, a young man burdened by heavy taxes and an ever‑tightening grip of authority. His idealism is sharpened by the harsh reality of daily survival, driving him toward a path of defiant leadership. Opposite him, his uncle Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai embodies a more measured voice, urging patience and compromise in a world that seems to demand either surrender or fire.
