Kerekes panics that the police are after him after a prank by his friends and returns to his hometown, where he was accused of betraying a Jewish druggist and his wife to the Nazis. His friends follow him, staging a mock trial that convicts him, leading to a suicide attempt. The story unfolds through flashbacks and hallucinations set against the backdrop of the Eichmann trial. The film and its director Antal Pager later drew unwanted publicity from a 1967 Variety article accusing Pager of Nazi collaboration.
