André Antoine’s final film adapts Alphonse Daudet’s play, placing the story in 19th‑century Camargue. Young heir Frédéri, son of prosperous farmers, falls passionately for a beautiful Arlesienne and dreams of marrying her. When his family learns she once loved a herdsman, the revelation devastates Frédéri, destroying his hopes.
