Sayo seduced various prison guards specifically to conceive a child. Since she was sentenced to life imprisonment and facing execution, she wanted to have a daughter who could carry on her vengeance against the criminals who destroyed her family. This was her final act of defiance and her way of ensuring her mission would continue beyond her own life.

Early in the film, Sayo tells fellow inmates about her burning desire for revenge, establishing her obsessive need to continue her fight through her child.

Yuki underwent rigorous training under Priest Dōkai starting in 1882 (Meiji 15). He shaped her into a formidable swordswoman, transforming her into the legendary assassin known as Shurayuki-hime. The training was intense and prepared her to methodically hunt down each of her mother's tormentors.

Before her training begins, Yuki already carries the weight of her mother's tragic story, providing motivation for her demanding apprenticeship.

Gishirō never actually died in the shipwreck. He faked his death to escape Yuki's pursuit. Reporter Ryūrei Ashio revealed this shocking truth, Gishirō was actually his father, and he had orchestrated the fake death three years earlier to hide from Sayo's vengeful daughter.

Yuki learns of Gishirō's death early in her hunt, but the timeline and ease of his supposed death plant seeds of doubt about whether her mission is truly complete.

Ashio was a reporter who initially wanted to expose Yuki's story to the world. Priest Dōkai persuaded him to target one of Sayo's tormentors, Kitahama Okono, instead. Later, it was revealed that Gishirō was Ashio's father, which complicated his allegiance, though he ultimately helped Yuki kill Gishirō when he attempted to shoot her.

Ashio's strong refusal to reveal Yuki's location to Okono's henchmen hints at a deeper motivation beyond journalistic interest.

Kobue is the daughter of Takemura Banzō, whom Yuki killed earlier in the film. Banzō was an addict whose daughter was forced into prostitution to support his habits. After Yuki killed her father, Kobue sought revenge and tracked Yuki down, wounding her fatally in the snowy landscape, continuing the cycle of violence that defines the film.

Yuki's execution of Banzō is portrayed as righteous justice, but the brief mention of Kobue's forced prostitution hints at the human cost that would later demand its own retribution.

After being severely wounded by Kobue and lying motionless in the snow, Yuki miraculously regains consciousness as the winter sun rises. The ending suggests her survival is almost supernaturally resilient, she was left for dead but the indomitable spirit of life refused to let her die, hinting at her continued existence despite the brutal cycle of violence.

The film's recurring imagery of snow and death throughout, combined with Yuki's legendary status as Shurayuki-hime, foreshadows her ability to endure even the most lethal circumstances.

Sayo's husband and son were murdered by four merciless criminals. One was Shokei Tokuichi, whom Sayo killed in prison before being sentenced. She later eliminated Shibayama (a gang leader) and Takemura Banzō. The final tormentor was Tsukamoto Gishirō, who faked his death in a shipwreck before Yuki finally killed him at the masquerade ball.

Sayo's detailed recounting of her family's murder to fellow inmates establishes the four names as the driving force of the entire narrative.

Shibayama was a brutal gang leader who commanded a ruthless following. He was one of the criminals responsible for the suffering in Sayo's past. After completing her training, Yuki targeted him as her first major assassination, systematically eliminating him and his entire gang. This was both revenge and a demonstration of her deadly skills to other evildoers.

The timeline establishes that Yuki's training concludes in 1882, and her first action is to track down powerful criminal figures from her mother's era.

Matsuemon was the chief of an underground network of street beggars. After Yuki killed Shibayama, she sought his help in tracking down the remaining assailants who tormented her mother. In exchange for information about Shibayama's demise, Matsuemon provided Yuki with leads that guided her to Takemura Banzō and ultimately to the truth about Gishirō.

Yuki's strategic move to ally with Matsuemon after eliminating Shibayama demonstrates her calculated approach to completing her mission.

Yuki infiltrated Okono's territory and systematically eliminated his guards before confronting him directly. She found Okono already dead, hanging from the ceiling, but struck him down anyway to ensure his destruction. This was one of the major turning points in her revenge mission, facilitated by Ashio's earlier actions against Okono.

Ashio's decision to target Okono earlier creates an opportunity for Yuki to finish what the reporter started.
