Jayaraman, popularly known as Kunjaliyan (young brother-in-law), is introduced as the pampered youngest member of three sisters in Gopalapuram, a village perched on the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He was the beloved little one in the family, the pet of his sisters, and he showed little interest in getting a regular job. Life in the household worked smoothly for a while, with the sisters sheltering him from responsibility and the world outside.
Everything changes when the sisters get married. The brothers-in-law, along with their uncle and two aunts, lose interest in Jayaraman, and the once-coddled young man suddenly faces the harsh reality of neglect from those who once protected him. The sense of being cared for dwindles, and the ease of his lazy days begins to fade as the family dynamics shift.
Driven by a dream of wealth and a longing to prove himself, Jayaraman makes a bold move: he leaves Gopalapuram to chase fortune. His journey leads him to Dubai, where he lands a job as a camel herder. For a time, the new environment and the hope of success give him a sense of purpose, but the global recession soon bites hard. The job is terminated, and the dream of riches starts to feel distant.
With money and prospects shrinking, Jayaraman is forced to return home, but not without a stubborn condition: he won’t come back to the village until he can return as a millionaire. The return is not simply a homecoming; it is a reckoning with his own ambitions and the reality of what he left behind.
Back in the familiar surroundings, Jayaraman’s fortunes begin to hinge on the guidance of his long-time friend in Dubai, Preman. Following Preman’s advice, he prepares for a welcome that promises reconciliation, even as the family’s behavior at the airport tells a different story. The moment he steps off the plane, he is met with a warmth and enthusiasm from his relatives that surprises him: they rush to take their young brother-in-law/nephew home, eager to rewrite the story of his place in the family.
This sudden burst of hospitality raises a central question that threads through the tale: why is everyone so eager to embrace him now, after years apart?
