Krippendorf’s Tribe

Anthropologist James Krippendorf and his wife Jennifer take their three children on a long-awaited expedition to New Guinea to locate a lost tribe. The harsh realities of the jungle and cultural misunderstandings lead to a faltering search, and the family returns disappointed. The failure sets the stage for the personal and financial strain that follows.

Back in the United States, Jennifer dies, leaving Krippendorf to raise their three children alone. The bereavement deepens his grief and destabilizes his career as grant funds begin to dry up. He becomes a wary, overextended father trying to make ends meet while maintaining his academic standing.

To cope with the financial pressure and his pride, Krippendorf invents an imaginary tribe called the Shelmikedmu. He uses the names of his children as the tribe's basis, blurring lines between scholarship and fabrication. The invention becomes the centerpiece of his renewed, though fraudulent, academic career.

Krippendorf shoots a fake 16 mm documentary featuring his children as Shelmikedmu members. He overlays or intercuts footage of a real New Guinean tribe to lend credibility to the hoax. The film becomes a slick, marketable product fueling his public persona.

By weaving the Shelmikedmu story into grant-funded projects, Krippendorf maintains the illusion and becomes famous for a culture that supposedly exists. He bases the tribe on the children's names, turning family into legend and scholarship into show. The deception is now a widely celebrated fabrication.

Veronica Micelli reaches out to cable-TV producer Henry Spivey, pressuring Krippendorf to continue filming and produce more footage. The growing industry attention makes it harder for him to confess, and Spivey fuels the production machine. Krippendorf finds himself caught between his guilt and the lure of fame.

Ruth Allen begins to doubt the authenticity of Krippendorf's 'Shelmikedmu' and questions the authenticity and source of his claims. Her skepticism puts Krippendorf's reputation on the line and threatens to expose the deception. The pressure mounts as rivals close in.

Krippendorf masquerades as a tribal elder, while his two sons, Mickey and Edmund, craft increasingly elaborate rituals for the supposed Shelmikedmu. The performances become more elaborate, heightening both the spectacle and the risk of discovery. Shelly watches with mounting discomfort at her father's deceit.

The eldest daughter Shelly refuses to join in the deception, resisting the lies about a culture she sees as a sham. Her stance creates tension within the family and foreshadows eventual conflict. Krippendorf must balance his ambition with his daughter's moral stance.

Krippendorf tricks Veronica into participating in the false documentary, and she uncovers the truth gradually. Although she is initially angry, her perspective shifts and she helps Krippendorf continue the fraud to protect his family. This complicates the relationships and deepens the central moral conflict.

Ruth travels to New Guinea and discovers there is no Shelmikedmu tribe in the location Krippendorf described. She confirms the deception and sends a fax to a colleague detailing the fraud. The revelation triggers the sequence that could end Krippendorf's career.

At the gala, Ruth's report prompts a countermove: Mickey improvises a magical-ritual lie, while Shelly recruits New Guinean friends to masquerade as Shelmikedmu to discredit Ruth. The ploy holds long enough for the crowd to accept Krippendorf's story, and the fraud is abandoned. Krippendorf ends the deception, and he and Veronica become a couple, with Veronica stepping into the mother role for his children.
