Kraven the Hunter

The ending of “Kraven the Hunter” sees Sergei fully embracing his transformation into the classic Marvel villain. After a series of events, he returns to his father’s house and discovers a memento from his past: his father’s lion vest, made from the actual lion’s head that nearly killed him as a child. By putting on the vest and adopting the pose from the comics—a symbolic moment—Kraven signifies his complete evolution into the hunter he is destined to be. This act also signals a darker turn for his character, as he accepts the darkness within himself, aligning with the ominous note from his late father that equates their legacies as legendary hunters.

Prior to this, the film hints that Sergei was influenced by his father’s manipulations and dark history, even orchestrating the attack on his father with the help of animals, which suggests he was driven by a desire to confront and ultimately reject Nikolai’s evil legacy. Kraven’s decision to finally go after his father stems from the betrayal he uncovered—that Nikolai had used one son to eliminate threats and was willing to sacrifice the other. This makes Sergei channel his rage into a final confrontation, culminating in him wearing the lion vest as a symbol of his new, brutal identity.

The movie also reveals that Sergei’s brother Dimitri has gained the ability to shapeshift, transforming into a version of The Chameleon, one of Spider-Man’s earliest foes, after meeting with the same geneticist behind his powers. Despite criticising their father’s criminal empire, Dimitri still chooses to take it over, perhaps driven by a desire to maintain some connection to his father’s legacy or out of a cycle of inherited darkness.

The film ends with ambiguous hints about the future: Calypso, who provided Sergei with the potion that saved him, is not seen again but possibly heads back to London, implying she might return later. Overall, the finale leaves viewers with a sense that Kraven is now fully locked into his role as a fierce, savage predator, embodying the dark, primal side of hero and villain alike. However, the rushed and somewhat inconsistent storytelling, along with characters’ surprising choices, leaves the ending feeling somewhat unfulfilling, with many questions about what comes next remaining unanswered. Whether or not this sets the stage for a sequel or a direct encounter with Spider-Man seems uncertain, especially since the film appears to be an isolated chapter in Sony’s universe, which might never crossover with the Marvel hero’s story. Nonetheless, Kraven’s transformation into a comic-accurate hunter signals that he remains a formidable threat, potentially lurking in the shadows for future stories.
