In New York City, 1934, jazz singer Dot Clark is linked to the late Professor Edward Wilson's fortune, rumored to be worth $77 million. Dot is his common-law wife and heiress to the money, and her shady partner Louie The Lug is eager to cash in. They set their sights on Egypt to claim the fortune.

Gerald Lane informs the law offices that Edward Wilson Jr. is the rightful heir to the inheritance, complicating the scheme. Eddie Wilson Jr. is living on a Brooklyn barge with Pops and his three roughhouse sons, dreaming of a life beyond the docks. The prospect of the fortune accelerates plans to sail for Egypt.

Eddie boards a ship bound for Egypt to claim the inheritance, accompanied by a mix of allies and rivals. On board, he befriends his beautiful niece Joan Larrabee and meets Colonel Henry Larrabee, who also seeks a share. Dot and Louie realize more people are traveling to Egypt for the money.
