By 1820 Edmund Kean, a celebrated Shakespearean actor, scandalizes society with his lifestyle. He loves Countess Elena de Koefeld, the Danish ambassador’s wife who fears losing her rank, while heiress Anna also declares love and seeks a stage career. Aristocrats boycott his shows, ruining his career, and on a night Kean dies in Elena’s arms.
