In 16th-century India, Tara is a princess, and Maya is her beautiful servant. They are inseparable friends, sharing secrets and dreams, but their bond sits atop a fragile harbor of jealousy and resentment. Maya endures the quiet indignities of wearing Tara’s hand-me-down clothes while Tara notices that Maya is treated with more affection by the people around them, including Maya’s own family and the attention of Tara’s hunchback brother, Biki. The social divide between them grows more pronounced as the girls approach marriageable age, casting a shadow over their camaraderie. The world around them is formal, ritual, and unequal, where dress, status, and lineage dictate the path of each girl’s life.
When the moment comes for Tara to be fitted for marriage, she is briefly hopeful that she will wed Raj Singh, a prince who seems to embody power and protection. Yet Raj’s gaze fixes on Maya the moment he sees her, and Tara’s hope quickly sours into a sting of jealousy. Maya’s beauty and talent captivate him, and Tara’s brow furrows as she witnesses Maya chosen in an instant by the man who should have chosen her. In a moment of hurt and fury, Tara strikes Maya, expelling her from the wedding as tears streak Maya’s face. The rupture between the two friends widens, and Maya, in her own way, begins a path of revenge that threads through the unresolved ache of their relationship.
Maya, left to pick up the pieces, unexpectedly encounters Raj and engages with him—an encounter that unfolds before Tara’s wedding rites are complete. The act is charged with danger and secrecy, and Biki, ever watchful, observes from the shadows. The romance that follows marks a turning point: Maya, who has long worn the clothes of Tara’s world, is entering a territory she never anticipated, a space where power and desire blur the boundaries between consent, choice, and conquest. The wedding night becomes a torturous moment: Raj rapes his bride, derisively calling her Maya, and the memory of that violated vow casts a pall over the union. Yet Tara’s longing for a loving relationship persists, even as she faces a marriage that does not feel like safety or belonging.
To salvage Maya’s honor and redefine her fate, a surprising turn occurs when [Biki] intervenes with a marriage proposal on Maya’s behalf. She refuses, and his response is brutal and public—branding her a whore and forcing her to leave her home. Left to wander, Maya encounters a young stone sculptor named Jai Kumar, who works for Raj. He confesses that Maya has inspired his most sensuous and beautiful sculptures, and he guides her toward an older mentor, the courtesan teacher Rasa Devi, who introduces Maya to a deeper, more informed world of sensual art. Maya’s romance with Jai evolves into a profound intellectual and emotional exchange, but Jai fears that his own focus on craft might derail his ability to create with Maya in mind. This tension leads Maya toward the discipline and discipline’s crucible: she seeks Rasa Devi’s tutelage and chooses to learn the art and discipline of the courtesan.
As the king, Raj’s indulgence and erratic behavior deepen. He recognizes Maya in Jai’s sculpture and orders his attendants to retrieve her, elevating Maya’s status to the king’s favored concubine. Jai’s standing rises in the court, yet the two lovers must conceal their past and their passion, aware that any public jointness could mean ruin. A looming invasion from the shah casts an ominous backdrop over palace intrigues: Raj sinks further into opium and decadence, misusing his power to extract tribute from the poor. The tension between Jai and Raj grows, and Maya and Jai continue their secret meetings, even as Jai’s fear of exposure and Raj’s merciless power loom large.
In private, Maya and Jai renew their vows, a testament to their shared bond and longing. Raj catches them together, and Jai is condemned to death. The world around them seems to crumble: Tara, heartbroken but resilient, finds herself drawn toward Maya once again as the two childhood friends seek a way through the wreckage of broken trust. Maya teaches Tara the art of seduction, promising her that love might still be possible, and Tara vows to help Maya escape to Jai’s side. But Raj’s fury is unyielding, and his rejection of Maya’s plea to free Jai seals a grim fate for Jai, who is sentenced to die.
Just as hope flickers, a serendipitous, brutal message arrives: a box from the shah bears the severed head of the grand vizier’s brother, a grim reminder of the shah’s reach and the state’s brutal calculus. Jai is executed by elephant, a public, tragic demonstration of power and punishment, while Maya watches from the crowd, her resolve hardened and her future uncertain. As soldiers marshal the palace for the shah’s arrival, Maya walks away into the distance, a solitary figure stepping into an uncertain world, bearing the memory of love, rebellion, and a life shadowed by power.
This tale unfolds as a sweeping, intimate chronicle of friendship strained by ambition and desire, of women navigating restrictive hierarchies, and of two wildly different paths to autonomy. It is a story where art and sexuality intertwine with political danger, where love can be both salvation and sentence, and where the choices of a single generation ripple through generations to come.
