Set at Rio Galdez’s isolated Brazilian trading post, a motley crew of outcast Americans and Europeans eke out a precarious existence. Jerry Russell, a former engineer obsessed with the Jivaro head‑hunters’ treasure, has quit his job, taken to heavy drinking, and lives with the local girl Maroa, yet he still receives letters from his Californian fiancée. When the glamorous Alice Parker arrives, expecting to marry a wealthy planter, she learns that Jerry has vanished into Jivaro country, pulling her into Rio’s tangled, peril‑filled world.
