Following a tragic event that claims the lives of two childhood friends, Iwane Sakazaki leaves his home and fiancée, Nao, becoming a wandering, masterless samurai. He travels to Edo, working as an eel seller by day and a bodyguard for Imazuya, a respected money exchanger, at night. Known for his gentle nature and swordsmanship, he earns the trust of those around him. However, Imazuya becomes the target of a plot to undermine the government’s new monetary system, forcing Iwane to defend the people who have shown him kindness.
