Opening on the salt flats, Eddie Lomax rides his Indian motorcycle in a rare moment of freedom. A breakdown sends him into a drinking haze, and he passes out beneath the open sky. When he wakes, war-haunted memories collide with a strange reunion as he encounters his old Army friend Johnny Sixtos.

Eddie reveals his plan to end his life after handing Johnny the motorcycle. He begins firing at random, and a stray bullet hits a passing truck, spiraling the situation out of control. The reckless moment shatters any calm and marks Eddie's plunge into violence.

Three Hogan brothers arrive, roughing Eddie up and forcing a confrontation. Johnny disappears amid the chaos, leaving Eddie beaten and shot as the brothers steal his bike. The sequence leaves Eddie on the brink of death, his life changed forever.
