When she pitches the idea, her boss, Dottie Birmingham [Holland Taylor], pushes her to cover another topic as well—mail-order brides. Reluctantly, Kate places an advertisement, and it draws a response from Robert Fitzgerald [Ted Wass], a successful Los Angeles businessman who frequently finds himself up against his partner, Joe Kimbel [Kenneth Kimmins]. For his latest challenge, Robert must take in a mail-order bride and refrain from sex with her for two weeks.

Kate heads to Los Angeles, and almost immediately she connects with Robert, sensing that he is a genuinely decent man even as she wrestles with guilt for using him as a story anchor. The two grow closer, and what starts as an assignment shifts into a real romance, prompting Kate to cancel the article. One night, after a bout of drinking, Kate brings Robert home and tries to seduce him, but he falls asleep. The next day, she jokes about having had sex with him; Robert, convinced he has lost the bet, confesses that he has fallen in love. Kate is furious about being part of a scheme and refuses to believe his claim of love, returning home and drafting a harsh article about him.

Robert sues for libel after reading the piece, and the courtroom confrontation initially keeps them apart. Yet beneath the anger, both realize their feelings haven’t vanished. Robert wins the case, and Kate is ordered to give him a written apology. Back home, Kate’s father, [Sam Wanamaker], encourages Robert to pursue her, and he makes a bold move, climbing aboard a train to reach her. In the end, their separation gives way to reconciliation as they share a kiss, sealing a hopeful turn in their unlikely romance.
