In 1944, amid World War II, modest barber Toyomatsu Shimizu lives frugally with his wife Fusae and their five‑year‑old son in a quiet seaside town. Drafted, he is ordered to execute a captured U.S. soldier but only wounds his arm. The Americans deem this insufficient, arrest him, try him as a war criminal and hand down the harshest punishment.
