Diane agrees to marry the much older Clive Lattimer not for romance, but to save her stepfather Areal Pacheco, the Minister of Finance. Pacheco has embezzled $200,000 from the national treasury, and an imminent audit threatens to expose his crime. Lattimer, being rich and powerful, is willing to cover the $200,000 shortfall if Diane marries him.

Pacheco orders his butler Luigi to kidnap Diane to prevent her from interfering with her engagement to Lattimer. Since Larry O'Brien has fallen in love with Diane and is actively pursuing her, Pacheco fears Larry will derail the arrangement that would save him from exposure. By kidnapping Diane and moving her to Lattimer's country estate, Pacheco creates a situation that forces the engagement to proceed.
