Set against the grim backdrop of Manila’s Smokey Mountain, the film follows a young scavenger who shoulders her crippled mother while begging on the steps of the Manila Cathedral. After being assaulted by an unknown man, she abandons her life of poverty and ultimately rises to fame as a celebrated singer, a rags‑to‑riches journey that highlights both her resolve and the harsh realities of the slum.
