Elizabeth, determined to end the ordeal, manages to persuade him that they should return to Utah.

Back in Utah, the trio hitchhikes through Sandy, and Elizabeth’s quiet conversation with a stranger provokes Mitchell’s anger, setting the stage for a fateful confrontation. After a store visit, Elizabeth spots missing-person posters that renew a sense of possibility. Mitchell insists that she is not listed and that everyone has forgotten her, but a quick police response soon proves otherwise. In the ensuing moment of truth, Elizabeth is separated from her captors, and Mitchell and Barzee are arrested.

The narrative shifts to Elizabeth’s reunion with her family, as Ed Smart [George Newbern] and Lois Smart [Anne Openshaw] welcome her back, while Mary Katherine and the rest of the family are brought into the fold.
