The book behind the movie

The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Stories

by Edgar Allan Poe

Roger Corman and Richard Matheson retain Roderick and Madeline Usher, the decaying mansion, family extinction, cataleptic burial, Madeline's return, the storm, and the house collapsing into its tarn. To expand Poe's short story, they make visitor Philip Winthrop Madeline's fiance, invent a hereditary history of cruelty, emphasize Roderick's deliberate entombment, and replace the narrator's ambiguous friendship with romantic rescue. The collection provides the compact original and exposes how much of the film's plot is new, while also showing why its color, ancestral portraits, and doomed architecture remain faithful to Poe's central imaginative structure.
