In the struggling rust-belt region of rural Ohio, Ruth Avery sees a chance for a better future when she’s accepted to college. To help her family, she and her brother join a dangerous scrap metal crew, risking everything to steal metal from abandoned factories during the night. As winter arrives, Ruth confronts a difficult decision: pursue her education and escape her circumstances, or remain loyal to her family and the life she knows, where the cost of advancement could be devastating.
