World War I Austro‑Hungarian barracks house a mix of Czechs, Jews, Italians and other ‘suspect’ soldiers under German officers. A sadistic lieutenant imposes order by humiliating them. The men kidnap and humiliate him, sabotage his inspection, imprisoning ringleaders. They flee to Budapest, pose as guards, are recaptured and face a court‑martial.
