Born the only child of a poor family in Odense, Denmark, Hans Christian Andersen retreats into imagination. He crafts hand‑carved dolls, recalls his father’s bedtime stories, and discovers a talent for fantastical tales that give brief escape. Those dreams carry him to Copenhagen, where he is told real aspirations can come true.
