In “1984” Orwell warned that television could become Big Brother’s tool of control. At the dawn of the so‑called Orwellian year, Nam June Paik and his collaborators set out to prove the opposite, using satellite TV to foster a positive, intercontinental cultural exchange. A live program linked WNET in New York with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and was relayed through broadcasters in Germany and South Korea, reaching an estimated ten to twenty‑five million viewers across repeat transmissions.
