What Happens in Golmaal Again: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Golmaal Again (2017) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The story begins in the scenic hills of Ooty, where five boys—Gopal (Ajay Devgn), Madhav (Arshad Warsi), Laxman 1 (Shreyas Talpade), Laxman 2 (Kunal Khemu), and Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor)—reside in an orphanage managed by a businessman named Jamnadas. The group is divided by a mutual dislike; Gopal and Laxman 1 form one duo, while Madhav, Lucky, and Laxman 2 form a trio. Their personalities are distinct: Gopal lives in constant fear of ghosts, Lucky is mute, and Laxman 1 struggles with a lisp. During their time there, they are aware of the local librarian, Anna (Tabu), who possesses the supernatural ability to see spirits. One night, the boys discover an abandoned baby outside the orphanage and decide to take her in, naming her Khushi.

The friendship between the two groups is further strained when Madhav plays a prank to terrify Gopal inside an empty bungalow owned by Colonel Chauhan, a friend of Jamnadas. The resulting conflict leads to Gopal being punished, which sparks a chain of events where Gopal and Laxman 1 decide to leave the orphanage. Shortly after, Madhav, Lucky, and Laxman 2 also depart. In the aftermath, little Khushi is adopted.

Twenty-five years pass, and the five former orphans have grown up to become plot seizers. Gopal and Laxman 1 now work for Babli Bhai (Sanjay Mishra), while Madhav, Lucky, and Laxman 2 are employed by Vasooli Bhai (Mukesh Tiwari). Their paths cross once again upon learning of Jamnadas's passing. Returning to Ooty for the memorial service, they encounter Colonel Chauhan, who is now blind, as well as Anna and Pappi (Johnny Lever), a former orphan and caretaker who suffers from memory loss. They also meet Damini (Ashwini Kalsekar), the caretaker of the bungalow, and learn about the tragic demise of the Colonel's daughter.

During the memorial, a businessman named Vasu Reddy (Prakash Raj) reveals his cold-hearted plan to demolish the orphanage to make way for a new building. This creates tension, especially when Anna and the Colonel decide to rent out two rooms, much to Vasu's annoyance. After the group returns home, a supernatural event occurs: a ghost possesses Laxman 1 and speaks in a booming voice, claiming that Jamnadas's death was actually a murder, which leaves Gopal absolutely terrified.

In an attempt to help, Anna convinces Gopal and Laxman 1 to move into Colonel Chauhan's house. Meanwhile, the ghost possesses Madhav, influencing Vasooli Bhai to assign Madhav, Lucky, and Laxman 2 to evict Gopal and Laxman from the bungalow for Vasu's benefit. This manipulation effectively brings all five friends back to Ooty. Upon arriving, the two groups discover that the Colonel's daughter died on the same night as Jamnadas, yet their rivalry persists. Madhav and his crew attempt to scare Gopal away, but the ghost possesses Gopal, who then proceeds to beat up Lucky and Laxman 2.

The conflict escalates when Vasu orders Madhav's group to burn the house down. However, Lucky becomes possessed by the spirit, speaking in the same haunting voice and frightening everyone. Despite the chaos, Anna and Damini persuade the group to stay for a birthday celebration, leading to a heartfelt reconciliation. However, a chilling discovery is made when Pappi shows photographs from the party; Damini is completely absent from the photos, and Pappi reveals he saw no one sitting next to Gopal. They realize that Damini was actually Pappi's girlfriend and a housemaid, and the spirit sitting beside Gopal was the Colonel's daughter. As the group panics, Anna reveals the truth: the ghost is actually Khushi.

In a revealing flashback, Khushi explains that she was adopted by Colonel Chauhan and his wife. She had fallen in love with Nikhil Surana (Neil Nitin Mukesh), Jamnadas's nephew. Nikhil was secretly collaborating with Vasu Reddy to seize the orphanage and build an amusement park. When Jamnadas discovered this plot, he threatened to change his will to leave his fortune to Pappi. In a fit of rage, Nikhil murdered Jamnadas. When Khushi confronted him and threatened to go to the police, Nikhil strangled her to death. With Vasu's help, these crimes were staged as accidents. Khushi's spirit had approached Anna for help, and because the five boys had a special connection to her, they were brought to the house to secure justice.

In the climax, Gopal finds the courage to fight Vasu's thugs. While the other boys are initially hesitant, they are eventually convinced to stand their ground. They nearly trick Vasu into a confession, but Nikhil arrives, arrogantly claiming there is no evidence to prove his guilt. A violent struggle ensues, and Khushi's spirit attacks Nikhil, nearly killing him before Anna intervenes to calm her. Ultimately, Vasu convinces Nikhil to confess to his crimes. With the orphanage saved and the truth revealed, Khushi's spirit bids a final, emotional farewell to the boys and Anna before departing for heaven.

Golmaal Again Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Golmaal Again (2017): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why was Khushi's ghost targeting the five friends?

Khushi's spirit specifically targeted the five men because they were the only family she had ever known, they were the orphans who had found her as an abandoned baby at the Ooty orphanage years earlier and raised her together. Because of this lifelong emotional bond, she trusted them to fight for justice on her behalf and expose the truth behind her murder. Anna reveals that this special connection is why Khushi's ghost reached out to her specifically, asking her to bring the five boys back together.

Foreshadowing: The opening orphanage scenes showing the boys discovering baby Khushi establish the emotional foundation that makes the ghost's later attachment to them believable.

  • khushi ghost
  • five friends
  • orphanage baby
  • supernatural bond
Q2

Why did Nikhil Surana kill Jamnadas?

Nikhil murdered Jamnadas in a fit of rage after his uncle discovered his secret plot to demolish the orphanage and build an amusement park in collaboration with Vasu Reddy. When Jamnadas threatened to change his will and leave his entire fortune to Pappi instead, Nikhil realized his inheritance and business scheme were collapsing. Consumed by greed and anger, he killed Jamnadas before the will could be altered, then later strangled Khushi when she threatened to report him to the police.

Foreshadowing: Vasu Reddy's early announcement about demolishing the orphanage plants the seed of the business conspiracy that drives Nikhil's motive.

  • nikhil surana
  • jamnadas murder
  • will
  • inheritance
  • amusement park plot
Q3

How did the abandoned baby Khushi end up being the ghost haunting the bungalow?

Khushi was adopted by Colonel Chauhan and his wife after the five boys left the orphanage, and she eventually fell in love with Nikhil Surana, Jamnadas's nephew. When she discovered Nikhil had murdered Jamnadas and threatened to expose him, he strangled her to death and, with Vasu's help, staged her death as an accident. Her spirit lingered because she needed justice and because the five boys, her original family, were the only ones she trusted to fight for the truth.

Foreshadowing: Anna's quiet interest in the boys' reunion and her insistence they move into Chauhan's bungalow hint that she already knows Khushi's story.

  • khushi ghost origin
  • colonel chauhan adoption
  • nikhil murder
  • staged accident
Q4

Why did the ghost possess Laxman 1, Madhav, and Lucky at different times?

Each possession served a specific strategic purpose in Khushi's plan to reunite the five friends at the haunted bungalow. When Khushi possessed Laxman 1, it created panic that drove Gopal and Laxman 1 to seek Anna's help and move into Colonel Chauhan's house. Possessing Madhav then pushed Vasooli Bhai to send Madhav, Lucky, and Laxman 2 to that same bungalow to evict Gopal and Laxman, effectively dragging the rival faction back to Ooty as well.

Foreshadowing: The prank Madhav pulled on Gopal in Colonel Chauhan's empty bungalow during their orphanage days sets up the same bungalow being the reunion location decades later.

  • ghost possession
  • laxman 1
  • madhav
  • lucky
  • reunion plan
Q5

What is the connection between Colonel Chauhan's daughter's death and Jamnadas's death?

Both deaths occurred on the same night because they were part of the same chain of murders carried out by Nikhil Surana and covered up by Vasu Reddy. After strangling his uncle Jamnadas for threatening to change his will, Nikhil then killed Khushi, the Colonel's adopted daughter, when she discovered the crime and threatened to report him. Both murders were staged as accidents to protect Nikhil's inheritance and his partnership with Vasu on the orphanage demolition project.

Foreshadowing: The Colonel being introduced as blind adds to the sense that the truth around him is being deliberately hidden.

  • colonel chauhan daughter
  • jamnadas
  • same night
  • staged accidents
Q6

Why did Anna convince Gopal and Laxman 1 to move into the haunted bungalow?

Anna deliberately tricked them into moving into Colonel Chauhan's bungalow because she knew the ghost haunting it was actually Khushi, who needed all five original caretakers together in one place to expose her killers. By lying that the ghost was still in their home, Anna created the urgency that pushed Gopal and Laxman 1 toward the bungalow. At the same time, Khushi's possession of Madhav ensured the other three friends would also be sent there, completing the reunion.

Foreshadowing: Anna's calm reaction to the supernatural possession and her immediate insistence on relocation hint that she understands far more than she initially reveals.

  • anna deception
  • haunted bungalow
  • trick
  • reunion setup
Q7

Why couldn't Damini be seen in the birthday celebration photographs?

Damini could not be seen in the photographs because she was never actually present at the celebration, she had been dead long before the boys arrived at the bungalow. The real person sitting next to Gopal in the photos was Khushi's invisible spirit, and Pappi's confused claim that no one was sitting there exposed the truth. Once the group realized Damini had passed away, it became clear that Khushi's ghost had been impersonating her to stay close to the boys without frightening them.

Foreshadowing: Pappi's memory loss and confused remarks throughout the film are early hints that his perception of events is unreliable.

  • damini missing photos
  • pappi memory loss
  • khushi impersonation
  • ghost revelation
Q8

What was Vasu Reddy's role in Jamnadas and Khushi's murders?

Vasu Reddy was Nikhil's business partner in the scheme to demolish the orphanage and build an amusement park, making him a direct accomplice in both murders. After Nikhil killed Jamnadas, Vasu helped stage the death as an accident, and he repeated the cover-up when Khushi was strangled. His primary motivation was financial, as the demolition project would have made him wealthy, and he actively pressured Vasooli Bhai's men to burn down the bungalow to eliminate any remaining evidence.

Foreshadowing: Vasu's aggressive announcement about demolishing the orphanage at Jamnadas's own memorial establishes his ruthless priorities early on.

  • vasu reddy accomplice
  • amusement park
  • staged murders
  • orphanage demolition
Q9

Why did Khushi's ghost need all five boys reunited before revealing the truth?

Khushi's spirit needed all five men together because they were the only witnesses she trusted who also had the physical courage to confront Nikhil and Vasu. On her own, she could only possess people and deliver warnings, but she needed the boys' combined strength, numbers, and willingness to fight in order to overpower Vasu's thugs during the climax. Anna clarifies that Khushi's spirit had been deliberately engineering their reunion from the moment she possessed Laxman 1.

Foreshadowing: Anna's calm insistence that the boys reconcile during the birthday celebration hints that their unity serves a larger supernatural purpose.

  • five boys reunion
  • khushi plan
  • confrontation
  • justice
Q10

Why was Nikhil trying to demolish the orphanage?

Nikhil wanted to demolish the orphanage because he had a secret business partnership with Vasu Reddy to replace it with a profitable amusement park, which would make both men extremely wealthy. The orphanage land was valuable, and as Jamnadas's nephew, Nikhil stood to inherit the property if his uncle died without changing his will. His greed for both the inheritance and the amusement park profits was the driving force behind the entire murder plot.

Foreshadowing: Vasu Reddy's announcement of the demolition plan at Jamnadas's own memorial service reveals how little respect he has for the orphanage's legacy.

  • nikhil orphanage demolition
  • amusement park
  • vasu reddy partnership
  • land grab
Q11

How did Anna know about the ghost from the beginning?

Anna knew about the ghost from the start because she possesses the supernatural ability to see spirits, a trait established early in the film when the boys were still at the orphanage. Khushi's spirit had personally approached Anna and asked for her help in bringing the five boys back to expose her killers. This is why Anna calmly coordinated their move into the haunted bungalow instead of warning them to run, and why she was able to reveal the full truth at the right moment.

Foreshadowing: The opening orphanage scenes mention Anna's ability to see spirits, planting the explanation for her later supernatural knowledge.

  • anna sees spirits
  • supernatural ability
  • khushi spirit
  • library
Q12

Why did Gopal, who was terrified of ghosts, end up fighting Vasu's thugs?

Gopal, who had been terrified of ghosts his entire life, found the courage to fight Vasu's thugs because he finally understood that Khushi's ghost was not a threat but the orphan baby he and his friends had once loved and protected. Realizing that the spirit needed their help to get peace, his fear transformed into protective resolve. Once the other boys saw Gopal standing his ground, they were compelled to join him, turning their lifelong cowardice into collective bravery.

Foreshadowing: Gopal's lifelong fear of ghosts is set up early so his transformation into the bravest fighter in the climax carries maximum emotional weight.

  • gopal courage
  • ghost fear
  • fight thugs
  • character arc
Q13

Why did Vasu Reddy convince Nikhil to confess at the end?

Vasu convinced Nikhil to confess only when he realized the ghost's attack had left Nikhil visibly broken and that the supernatural evidence was beyond anything they could deny or cover up. With Khushi's spirit actively attacking Nikhil and the five boys closing in, Vasu saw that continuing to deny the murders would put his own life at risk. His decision to turn on Nikhil was a calculated act of self-preservation, sacrificing his partner to save himself.

Foreshadowing: Vasu's earlier panic when confronted about the orphanage hints at his willingness to abandon allies when cornered.

  • vasu confession
  • nikhil arrested
  • self-preservation
  • ghost attack
Q14

What ultimately happened to the orphanage after the truth was revealed?

The orphanage was saved once Vasu's demolition plan was exposed and his accomplice Nikhil confessed to both murders. With the legal threat removed and the business conspiracy dismantled, the property remained under the original ownership tied to Jamnadas's will, allowing Anna, Colonel Chauhan, and Pappi to continue running it. The film closes on an emotional note with Khushi's spirit bidding farewell to the five men before ascending, finally at peace.

Foreshadowing: Colonel Chauhan's defiance in renting out rooms of the house at the memorial foreshadows the orphanage's eventual preservation.

  • orphanage saved
  • khushi farewell
  • happy ending
  • jamnadas will
