Set in 1899, the film follows Alyssa Milano as Frances Ella ‘Fizzy’ Fitz, a New York high-society girl who works as a typewriter and stenographer in an office. When she learns about the Alaska gold rush, she resolves to seek her fortune in the rough frontier. With train tickets priced out of reach, she joins a 24-man expedition led by Bruce Campbell as Pierce Thomas ‘PT’ Madison, a capable leader who is open to including a woman and sees how her typing skills could be useful in the wilderness. Fizzy fights to win her mother’s approval, and through unwavering persistence she finally earns consent.
During the journey, the men grow wary of Fizzy, and Barry Keown, Peter Flemming, voices the doubt that a woman who cannot do a man’s job should not be paid an equal wage and pushes to vote her out. Yet Madison remains determined to give her a fair chance. In Alaska, Fizzy wants to join the mining work, but Madison assigns her to an office. She eventually secures a stenographer position after a drunk employee is fired, and she asserts herself, earning the respect of her peers as she calmly exposes crooked rivals in a court hearing.
Disillusioned, Fizzy considers returning to New York, but money is tight and Madison explains that there is no train ticket in sight. To speed the venture, Fizzy stays with the men on the perilous expedition through freezing temperatures. Weeks pass, their food dwindles, and Madison admits he does not know how long the journey will last. Fizzy strives to keep spirits up with a playful snow fight, even as tragedy strikes when Pratt, Frank C. Turner, is killed in an avalanche.
After months, they reach a cabin only to discover the promised supplies never arrived. Fizzy accepts a typing job to earn funds that keep the expedition going, but she makes clear that she intends to mine gold with them eventually. A momentary closeness with Madison nearly turns into a kiss, but the interruption preserves the moment.
Eventually Fizzy finds gold and strikes it rich. One of the men, Ed Hawkins, who had pursued her for some time, proposes they team up to launch a New York–based company. At the same time, Madison envisions building a telephone company and asks Fizzy to finance it. She weighs both offers, ultimately turning away Hawkins’ proposal (partly due to his marriage offer) and choosing to continue the partnership with Madison, aware that success hinges on enduring the risks. The venture succeeds, though a contractual miscalculation leaves Fizzy unable to profit immediately, fueling disappointment and resentment toward broken promises. Rather than retreat, she harnesses the experience to forge her own mining venture, emerging as a respected figure in the Alaskan frontier.
