Naomi, a light‑skinned Black child, is abandoned by her mother and taken in by the kindly Mrs. Saunders. Obsessed with becoming white, she rejects her own community and is sent to a convent. She loves her adoptive brother Jimmie, yet agrees to marry his friend, only to be horrified by his darker skin and coarse manners.
