In New York City’s South Bronx, Jeri Dawn heads home with groceries, and in the building lobby she passes a man whose dress and demeanor feel out of place before she quickly boards the elevator.
At home, her husband Jack Dawn, an accountant for a New York mob family, awaits with a grim truth: there is a contract on their family because Jack has been feeding information to the FBI. The tension thickens as the dawn of danger looms over their doorstep, and a shadowy fate seems to hover just beyond the hallway.
Suddenly, their neighbor Gloria Swenson, Gena Rowlands, rings the doorbell, asking to borrow some coffee. Jeri reveals the threat hanging over them and begs Gloria to protect her children. The neighbor, a former mobster’s girlfriend, is wary but reluctantly agrees to help. The moment is charged with a mix of fear, duty, and a wary sense of responsibility that defies easy choices. Joan, the Dawn’s daughter, refuses to leave and locks herself in the bathroom, while Gloria takes their young son Phil and an incriminating ledger, narrowly escaping the hit squad.
After loud shotgun blasts erupt from the Dawns’ apartment, a visibly shaken Gloria decides that she and Phil must go into hiding. They slip away just as police enter with heavy weapons, and a crowd of onlookers and reporters captures the tense exodus on camera. In Manhattan, the pair hides in an empty apartment belonging to a friend of Gloria’s. The next morning, Phil sneaks out and sees his photograph on the front pages; the news brands Gloria as Phil’s suspected abductor, forcing them deeper into a perilous cat-and-mouse game.
The following day, realizing they are not safe, Gloria and Phil dart from one hiding place to another. Gangsters close in on them on the sidewalk, pressing Gloria to surrender the ledger. In a desperate move, Gloria fires at a gangster’s car, sending it flipping, a stark reminder that their fate is irrevocably tied to violence. Realizing their only chance of survival is to disappear, Gloria and Phil decide their destinies must diverge from the city’s grip.
Gloria heads to the bank to empty her safe deposit box, and the two eventually hole up in a flophouse. She confronts another wave of gangsters in a restaurant, demanding immunity in exchange for the ledger. “Only Mr. Tanzinni can agree to that,” one thug coldly explains, underscoring the power players who hold their fates in a dangerous grip.
The next day, Gloria contemplates sending Phil away to a boarding school, but Phil asserts his independence and resists. Overcome by guilt, Gloria seeks him out again, only to find him captured by wiseguys. She rescues him, killing one mobster in the process and fleeing through a taxi and the subway, aided by bystanders who recognize the human cost behind the chase.
The two finally secure a refuge in a hotel room, where Gloria laments the mob’s strength and ubiquity, and recounts that she was once Tanzinni’s mistress. She meets Tanzinni, relinquishes the ledger, and flees, another volley of gunfire echoing as an elevator car is shot at. Phil waits for hours, then makes his way to Pittsburgh by rail. In a cemetery, Phil and Gloria—disguised as his grandmother arriving by limousine after surviving the ordeal—reunite, a haunting emblem of resilience amid a world where danger never truly ends.
Only Mr. Tanzinni can agree to that
