Young hatamoto Harima Aoyama falls for his commoner housemaid Okiku. He pledges his love is genuine and promises she will not suffer. Though she initially resists due to strict class rules, he eventually wins her. Political necessity forces Harima into an arranged marriage with a woman of his rank to safeguard his family as many clans face dissolution.
