After the Spanish Civil War ends in 1939, Republican photographer Francesc Boix flees Spain, is captured by the Nazis in 1940 and sent to Austria’s Mauthausen concentration camp. While forced to work for the SS photographic unit, he hides about 20,000 negatives from 1943‑45, later used as key evidence in post‑war trials of Nazi war criminals.
