In pre‑World War I Paris, aspiring artist Pierre LeBlanc marries Janine, a dressmaker’s assistant, and they enjoy a happy life. War forces Pierre into the army; Janine dies giving birth. Overcome with grief, he volunteers for a dangerous behind‑enemy patrol, is wounded, and while recuperating sketches dresses. After the war he becomes a wealthy, famed designer. Years later, devoted to his daughter, Pierre seeks to marry a young woman his daughter likes, but relinquishes his own plans to secure his daughter’s happiness.
