Fly My Kite

Dan wants Grandma out because he has already spent the money from her grocery store sale. He plans to remarry and take control of the house, but he needs Grandma gone to do so. He even threatens to send her to the Poor Farm since waiting for her to die of old age would take too long.

After Dan kicks her out, Grandma receives a letter informing her that she holds savings bonds and should contact the bank. Dan had already discovered this letter and gone to the bank himself, learning the bonds are worth approximately $100,000. Grandma then finds the actual bonds while packing to leave.

Grandma discovers the bonds have value while watching Chubby and Dickie try to fly a kite. She realizes the bonds can serve as weight to help the kite fly properly, so she attaches them to the kite's tail. This practical decision later makes the bonds mobile and leads to the chase.

Dan returns to the house specifically to seize the bonds. He deliberately breaks Grandma's glasses as a cruel intimidation tactic, attempting to prevent her from seeing the truth. He then pretends to read a letter claiming the bonds are worthless, trying to fool her into giving up the bonds.

The Gang views Grandma as their own beloved grandmother. She shares stories, treats, and warmth with them, and they genuinely love her in return. When Dan attempts to evict her, the children rally together to protect her, forming a united front against the eviction.

Farina leads a coordinated assault on Dan while he climbs toward the kite. The kids throw rocks and mud at him, manipulate a power control to deliver an electric shock, and then use saws to cut through the pole itself. They push the pole over, causing Dan to crash into a pool of water below.

Grandma arrives at the power pole site with the police, having gone to get help during the chaos. By the time she arrives with law enforcement, the children have already toppled the pole and defeated Dan. Mary Ann has retrieved the bonds from the kite, ensuring Grandma's financial security is preserved.

Mary Ann retrieves the bonds after the chase concludes, securing Grandma's retirement. The bonds remain intact despite Dan's attempts to steal them. Grandma's financial future is protected, and the family celebrates their collective victory against Dan's greed.

The Poor Farm is a reference to an old county institution for elderly poor people. Dan uses this threat to pressure Grandma into leaving voluntarily, hinting he has already arranged for her to be sent there. This represents the cruel extent of his plan to discard her rather than let her stay in her own home.

Dan is the only adult in the pursuit, giving him a significant physical advantage over the children. Despite their numbers and teamwork, Dan manages to outrun most of the kids and reaches the kite first, climbing the power pole before they can catch him.

During the scramble, Dan momentarily gets the kite string from Chubby, but Pete takes off with the kite. In the ensuing chaos, the string eventually snaps and blows away in the air, forcing Dan to pursue the kite on foot rather than simply pulling it down.
