Flatland (2007) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Flatland (2007), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In a two-dimensional world called Flatland, inhabited by sapient polygons, only a few days remain before the grand celebration of the year 3000. The story centers on A Square, a diligent attorney whose daily routine includes teaching his young son, a curious little Hexagon, how to recognize sight and shape in their flat universe. The calm is abruptly disrupted when A Square’s brother, B Square, a clerk to President Circle, steps in with a warning: stay home for a crucial Senate meeting that could reshape Flatland’s social and political landscape.

The Senate session is convened to address mounting tensions between the government and a rising movement known as the Chromatists, led by Senator Chromatistes. The Chromatists advocate for the legalization of self-expression through color among Flatlanders, a stance that clashes with the Republic’s strict order. The Great Southern Republic touts its democratic values and its differing stance on Chromatism and the so-called Irregulars, setting itself apart from the Northern Kingdom, which is massing along the borders. The mood is tense, and relaxation of the laws is read by many as weakness—a potential invitation for the Northern Kingdom to press its advantage.

Against his brother’s dangerous warning, A Square agrees to meet his latest client, the first female charged as a Chromatist. On his return from the Senate, a chaotic melee erupts in the streets. President Circle’s soldiers move with brutal efficiency, killing Senator Chromatistes and his supporters and sparking riots that spread through the city. A Square makes it back to his home, where he and his family barricade themselves from the violence that rages outside.

The next morning brings a truth that chills the bones of Flatland: the riots trace back to the very Senate session that B Square attended. Martial law suffocates the city as A Square searches for his brother, convinced that there is more at stake than a mere political squabble. The tension escalates when a startling visitor appears: A Sphere, Simon G. Hammond, the CEO of Messiah, Inc., materializes with a bold mission. He has chosen A Square to persuade Flatland about the existence of a hidden, higher reality—three dimensions and the possibility of Spaceland beyond their two-dimensional world. With a firm resolve, A Sphere drags A Square out of Flatland and into a realm where three dimensions exist, broadening the scope of what is possible.

In Spaceland, the two travelers encounter a web of power and persuasion. A Sphere ushers A Square to the Great Hall and introduces him to the Flatland leadership, including the wary President Circle and the Priests who are already primed for such a revelation. When the leaders reject A Sphere’s message and attempt to kill him, those who witnessed the encounter are executed, with only B Square spared from death by imprisonment for life in exchange for his silence.

Time is running short, and A Square’s stay in Spaceland is not supposed to last. Messiah, Inc. becomes the center of a national emergency, and A Sphere escorts A Square to receive further education about the gospel of the Three Dimensions. A Square becomes enthralled by Spaceland’s complex geometry and vivid possibilities, even as he debates the existence of ever-higher dimensions. Yet A Sphere remains skeptical of such speculation, insisting that their focus must be on the immediate implications of three dimensions.

Back in Flatland, the political weather worsens. The Spaceland intrusion is treated as a direct threat, and the Spaceland Senate calls for a hearing to address this breach of protocol—an act that could be interpreted as a provocation of war by Flatland’s enemies, the X-Axis. The X-Axis views Flatland as an abomination and seeks its destruction, a belief echoed by many in the Great Senate. The debate grows heated as A Square, though physically weakened by the strain of being a two-dimensional being in a three-dimensional world, struggles to articulate a coherent theory of multiple dimensions to a crowd bent on preserving the status quo.

As sirens wail and air-raid alarms echo through the city, A Square collapses under the gravitational forces that press on his flat form. The narrative shifts to the precarious balance of power as chaos spreads and people react to the sudden, jarring expansion of reality. A Sphere manages to send A Square back to Flatland just as Messiah, Inc. comes under bombardment, signaling a brutal clash of worlds and ideologies.

Back on his own bed, A Square wakes to a stark reality: preaching about a third dimension has been outlawed. He visits B Square, who remains jailed, and attempts to explain the notion of Spaceland. Fearing execution, B Square knocks A Square unconscious to avoid a fatal outcome. When A Square returns home, he reveals a radical plan to defect to the Northern Kingdom, hoping for a more open society where ideas about dimensions might spread more freely. Frau A Square’s stirring “war cry” helps them escape the clutches of pursuing soldiers, but their flight is far from easy. They reach a border only to find themselves faced with the combined force of the Northern Kingdom’s army and the onslaught of Flatland’s collapsing reality.

In the end, as the two-dimensional world dissolves around them, a haunting voice greets A Square as he steps into a new dimension, signaling the beginning of a broader, transcendent journey beyond their familiar plane.
