Nick and Shawn hear about the cheerleading camp having around 300 female participants and realize it's the perfect opportunity to meet girls. They specifically want to escape their boring two-week football camp in El Paso under Coach Byrnes. To pull it off, they convince Shawn's sister Poppy to teach them basic cheerleading moves so they can blend in with the squad.

Nick tells Coach Byrnes a fabricated story that he just discovered he is adopted and urgently needs a kidney transplant from his biological father. This outrageous lie convinces Byrnes to let Nick stay at cheer camp longer, giving the boys more time to pursue their romantic interests.

Carly learns that Nick and Shawn initially planned to leave the cheer camp before the competition. An insider from the squad reveals their secret, exposing that they were only there to meet girls and never intended to stay for the actual competition. This betrayal of the team's trust angers Carly and the rest of the squad.

After being dismissed from camp following the exposure of their deception, Nick and Shawn attend a friend's party and realize they genuinely care about their teammates and the upcoming competition. They understand they've developed real feelings for cheerleading and their squad, prompting them to return and support the Tigers for the competition.

Earlier scenes showed both boys becoming increasingly invested in their routines and teammates, foreshadowing their genuine attachment.

During the competition, the squad executes their best routine yet, even attempting the ambitious "Fountain of Troy" maneuver. However, Shawn attempts a unnecessarily daring triple back-flip and lands in the water instead, injuring himself. Despite the mishap, the team achieves a ten-spot improvement from their previous year's placement.

Shawn shouts "Tigers" - the team name - as a final declaration of team spirit, encapsulating his genuine love for the squad and the sport. Even as he goes unconscious from his injury, he's focused on showing his devotion to his teammates and the team's identity.

Throughout the film, both boys adopt the team mascot and spirit, showing increasing commitment to their cheerleading identity.

Initially, Carly is skeptical of Nick and Shawn because she recognizes typical jock antics. However, as Shawn spends more time at camp and demonstrates genuine leadership by rallying the squad's spirits, Carly develops feelings for him. Their relationship deepens when Shawn stands up for her after she learns her boyfriend Rick is only with her for social status and gifts. They eventually share a kiss at the end.

While at cheerleading camp, Nick develops an interest in Diora, who is Coach Keith's wife. This adds another layer to his initial motivation of meeting girls, as he becomes genuinely attracted to her during their time at camp, separate from his original plan to simply find female companionship.

The Panthers are the Tigers' main competition in the cheerleading competition, led by captain Gwyneth. The Panthers are highly successful and have historically outperformed the Tigers, who placed last in previous competitions. This rivalry creates added pressure for the squad going into the competition.

Nick and Shawn do not win the competition. However, their squad achieves a significant improvement by placing ten spots higher than the previous year. The story concludes with both boys finding romantic success - Shawn kisses Carly - and gaining genuine appreciation for cheerleading beyond their original shallow intentions.
