Toma Alistar leads a nomadic gypsy orchestra from the Bessarabian steppes (modern Moldova). A virtuoso violinist, his reputation carries him to the grandest European capitals and royal courts. Though celebrated, he is haunted by his first love, Leanca, who married elsewhere while he was on tour, and he devotes his wealth and life to finding her.
