Ana Maria loves modest guitarist Júlio, but after she breaks onto the fado scene in a retirement tavern and receives applause from both public and critics, fame brings peers and patrons who court and promote her. Feeling betrayed, Júlio decides to leave for African colonies, leaving Ana Maria torn between her first love and lure of wealth and fame.
