A ambitious shoe salesman named Harold meets his boss’s daughter without realizing who she is and pretends to be a leather‑industry magnate. He spends the rest of the story concealing his true circumstances, first in the shop and later aboard a ship. While trying to deliver a letter, he ends up suspended high above the street on a building’s scaffolding, creating a suspenseful climax.
