What Happens in Feeling Through: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Feeling Through (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In New York City, a homeless teenager named Tereek Steven Prescod is out late with friends, the city lights glimmering as they part ways. When he notices a deaf and blind man, Artie Robert Tarango, holding a cane and a sign asking for help crossing the street, he hesitates briefly before stepping in to assist. Artie writes down the bus number he needs, and the two begin to introduce themselves as they walk toward the bus stop, slowly building a trust that grows with every small exchange. Even though Tereek is expecting messages from his girlfriend, he chooses to stay by Artie’s side to ensure he gets on the right bus, putting someone else’s safety ahead of his own plans.

At a nearby bodega, Artie says he’s thirsty, and Tereek uses Artie’s money to buy him a drink and a candy bar for himself, pocketing $10 in the process. They head back to the bus stop, only to miss the bus by a narrow margin. While they wait, Artie shares that he once went on a date and explains the need to be tapped by the bus driver when his stop arrives. When the bus finally pulls up, Tereek relays Artie’s needs to the driver Luis Antonio Aponte, who agrees to help him. The ride becomes a quiet moment of connection as Artie and Tereek reassure each other that they’ll be okay, and they share a heartfelt embrace before parting ways.

Back on the street, the night takes a morally charged turn. As the doors close on the bus, Tereek places the $10 he took from Artie into the cup of a sleeping homeless man, a small act that underscores the complexity of kindness, doubt, and the delicate balance between survival and generosity in a city that never stops.

Q1

Why does Tereek steal $10 from Artie?

Tereek steals the money out of desperation and survival instinct. As a homeless teenager living on the streets, he faces constant hardship and limited resources. The theft represents a moral compromise driven by his difficult circumstances, though he later demonstrates guilt and redemption by giving the money to another homeless man.

Q2

Why does Tereek give the stolen $10 to another homeless man?

Tereek gives the money away as an act of redemption and moral reflection. Q3

What does Artie mean when he says he needs to be tapped by the bus driver?

This is a practical accommodation method that DeafBlind people use to navigate public transportation independently. Tereek relays this instruction to the driver so Artie can travel safely.

Q4

Why does Tereek stay with Artie instead of meeting his girlfriend?

Despite his girlfriend messaging him and his own plans, helping a deaf and blind man navigate the city safely becomes his priority. This decision shows his character growth from initial hesitation to selfless commitment.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Tereek hesitates before offering help, showing his internal conflict between self-interest and compassion.

Q5

What does the title "Feeling Through" mean?

The title refers to how Tereek and Artie connect despite their differences - Tereek learns to 'feel through' to Artie through touch, patience, and intuitive communication. It also suggests emotional perception: understanding someone beyond words or typical senses. The title captures the film's theme of human connection transcending conventional communication.

Q6

Why is Artie alone on the streets at night if he's deaf and blind?

Artie navigates the city alone because he has adapted to live independently despite his disabilities. DeafBlind people often develop strategies and routines to move through familiar environments. The film shows he uses a cane, holds a sign requesting help crossing streets, and relies on public transit - demonstrating his independence while acknowledging when he needs assistance.

Q8

Why do Tereek and Artie go in different directions at the end?

The film suggests their brief bond leaves a lasting impact on both, but their lives continue on separate paths.
