Dr. Cordelier isolates himself in a Paris suburb to study the human brain. His old friend, Maître Joly, grows uneasy when Cordelier drafts a will leaving his fortune to the mysterious Monsieur Opale, a man known for attacking women and children. After a colleague is murdered, Joly confronts Cordelier and discovers why he protects Opale.
