Everybody Go Home!

Along the shimmering Venetian coast in September 1943, Italy’s sudden armistice throws the nation into chaotic limbo. The once‑orderly Royal Italian Army fragments as German forces move in, and ordinary soldiers find themselves stranded between two occupying powers. In this fractured landscape, the war’s grand strategies feel distant, while the yearning to return to ordinary life becomes a unifying, if uneasy, refrain. The atmosphere is a mix of weary humor and stark realism, letting the audience taste the absurdity of a country trying to rebuild itself amid lingering combat and shifting loyalties.

At the heart of the story is Alberto Innocenzi, a junior lieutenant whose sense of duty collides with a fresh, raw frustration as his comrades choose “home” over continued fighting. Driven by a fierce mixture of anger, bewilderment, and a lingering sense of responsibility, he soon teams up with an inventive army engineer, Ceccarelli, and a pragmatic sergeant, Fornaciari. Their bond forms against a backdrop of crumbling infrastructure, scarce supplies, and an ever‑present tension between survival and honor. Together they shed their uniforms for civilian clothes, embarking on an uncertain trek southward through a country split by occupation, partisan activity, and the everyday struggle for food and shelter.

The film’s tone balances bleak wartime scenery with moments of human tenderness and dark comedy, never losing sight of the lingering question of what it means to be a soldier when the front lines evaporate. As the trio moves deeper into Italy’s war‑torn heartland, they encounter a mosaic of strangers—partisans, civilians, and bewildered officials—each reflecting the nation’s fractured identity.
