In Victorian England, Esther enters domestic service and is wooed by the charming groom William, who soon abandons her for his employer’s daughter. Left to raise their child alone, Esther perseveres, and after seven years a prospect of happiness appears. Just as she begins to rebuild her life, William reappears, threatening her hard‑won stability.
