Bernie and Cinder Lumen embark on a challenging immigration journey from Fire Land to Element City. As fire elements, they face suspicion and xenophobia from other elemental beings in their new home.

The couple welcomes the birth of their daughter, Ember, bringing joy to their lives and motivating them to establish their traditional outlet, the Fireplace. This shop embodies their heritage and showcases their signature Blue Flame.

As the years pass, Bernie announces his desire to retire but sets a condition for Ember. He insists that she must learn to manage her fiery temperament before she can take over the family store.

One day, Ember attempts to run the store on her own but becomes overwhelmed by the crowd. In a moment of frustration, she accidentally breaks a water pipe, causing a flood in the Fireplace.

The flood leads to the unexpected arrival of Wade Ripple, a water element and city inspector. Despite her protests, Wade must report the plumbing issues, putting the future of the Fireplace at risk.

Wade decides to help Ember save the Fireplace. He takes her to Cyclone Stadium to meet with Gale Cumulus, wherein they discuss potential solutions to resolve the plumbing crisis affecting her store.

Wade reveals his investigation into leaks in the city's canals and proposes a solution centered on the Fireplace. They discover a gap in a dam, which is causing disruptions to the plumbing system.

After using sandbags to seal the hole fails, Ember ingeniously melts the sand into glass, creating a stronger patch for the leak. This impresses Wade's mother, Brook, who encourages Ember's pursuit of a glassmaking internship.

As they work together, the connection between Ember and Wade deepens. During a heartfelt moment, Wade expresses his feelings for Ember, leading to an emotional confession and the shedding of tears.

Gale approves the solution to the plumbing issue, allowing the Fireplace to remain open. However, Ember struggles with her desire to run the store against her own aspirations, leading her to end her relationship with Wade.
