During the early consolidation of the Castro revolution, 1961 saw more than 100,000 students dispatched from schools to the countryside to teach peasants to read. Set against the Bay of Pigs invasion, this docudrama follows 15‑year‑old Mario (Salvador Wood) as he arrives in a tiny Zapata swamp village, gradually winning the locals to his literacy mission while learning the harsh realities of rural life from the diligent peasants.
