In 2002, Craig volunteers for a covert experiment involving infrasound, EM fields, Ketamine, and optical stimulation. The session triggers a contact with his deceased sister, shocking everyone involved. The experiment ends with Craig seizing and his eyes exploding, signaling its danger.

Ten years after Craig’s experiment, a funeral serves as a narrative pivot, revealing Brayden Taylor's history as an anesthetist. Flashbacks show his medical work and the emotional toll of patients who see their dead loved ones. The scene foreshadows his later obsession with reversing death.

During a dinner party, Abbey experiences a miscarriage and collapses in the bathroom, prompting emergency surgery. The ordeal shows her fragility and foreshadows her connection to the others through the experiment. This event intensifies Brayden's grief and motivation.

After escaping the hospital, Abbey is struck in a hit-and-run and suffers further trauma. She begins to see flashes, glowing energy, and a pulsing light, whispering that 'It's very beautiful over there.' Her experiences deepen the line between life and death for the characters.

Brayden becomes obsessed with bringing Abbey back and seeks out Meiselhoff. The physicist’s widow warns him about risking his soul by upsetting the balance of nature. The backstory introduces a coalition of physicists pursuing a grand theory of the universe.

Louis Mastenbrook explains M-theory that our universe sits on a membrane parallel to infinite others. He claims the brain’s electromagnetic field carries consciousness across gravitational waves to another membrane. This provides the scientific rationale for contacting Abbey.

Brayden is recruited to assemble a team, including Craig Leeham, now blind but capable of communicating with personalities on other membranes. Craig believes Jenny is trapped between membranes, and Louis hints at a possible rescue. The assembly takes place at Brayden’s loft.

Brayden tries to operate the device but lacks expertise and nearly harms himself. Louis intervenes and helps, signaling the dangers of pushing the system too far. The crew begins to test the limits of their machinery.

In a closet isolation chamber, Brayden makes contact with Abbey while Craig experiences a vision of Jenny’s snowfall. The moment confirms that cross-membrane communication is possible but unstable. The event deepens Brayden's commitment to reaching Abbey at any cost.

With the machine pushed to its limit, Brayden undergoes general anesthesia and vanishes into the no-man’s land between membranes. He briefly encounters a figure in Edison gear, who then vanishes, and Carl Meiselhoff appears in the loft, signaling that a crossover has begun.

In the parallel universe, Brayden encounters Abbey and is reunited with her in a living form. At the same time, Craig crosses into Jenny’s world through a trance-enabled membrane merge. The pair begin to rebuild their lives in separate but connected realms.

Louis explains the impossibility of saving everyone without merging membranes. Craig and Brayden cooperate to merge the membranes, guided by Carl Meiselhoff’s appearance and the drive to rescue their loved ones. The rescue operation culminates in a partial crossing.

The epilogue shows Brayden and Abbey in their new world together, and Craig and Jenny in their own world. Jenny rubs Abbey’s gravestone rubbing, and Louis discusses how membranes can be 'beautiful'. The film closes on a note of hopeful continuity beyond death.
