Dale is reading a discarded book of fairy tales, and a tale about a brave warrior fighting a mighty dragon fuels his imagination. In that world, Chip joins him as a partner, organizing acorns like a squire and eagerly mimicking the knightly deeds he reads about. The two chipmunks drift into a playful fantasy, where bravery and adventure feel close at hand.
Suddenly, a loud rumble shakes the area and a shadowy figure appears in the distance. The monster’s rough features make Dale believe he’s face-to-face with a real dragon. Frightened, Dale hurries back to a tree that stands like a tiny castle, while Chip is busy gathering his own armor of acorns and quickly describes the sight to his companion.
They head out to seek the monster, but the threat has vanished by the time they arrive. Irritated, Chip dismisses Dale’s claim as nonsense, until the rumble returns and he too sees the dragon in person. The chipmunks scatter and hide in their stash of nuts, trying to figure out what to do next. The creature is revealed to be a steam shovel, operated by Donald Duck.
From a distance, Donald spots the chipmunks’ tree and decides it must be removed to clear space for a freeway he is building. He begins work on the tree, and the chipmunks retaliate by pelting the machine with whatever they can find. Watching the exchange, Donald uses the shovel’s bucket to fling them away, prompting a fierce counterattack.
Inspired by the fairy tale world they love, the two chipmunks craft their own costumes—Chip becomes the knight and Dale the horse—sharpening their resolve to protect their home. As they charge toward the battlefield, Donald spots them and prepares a sneaky trap by hiding a welding torch inside the shovel’s bucket. The pair charges forward, but the torch scorches Chip’s sword and forces a quick retreat.
Donald then tries to lure them out by feigning sleep, hoping to catch them off guard. Chip and Dale cautiously advance, and the two climactic figures clash once more. Donald pretends to falter with the steam shovel and slams the bucket down in an attempt to squash them, but the nimble pair escape.
Inside the machine, Chip and Dale realize they’ve been trapped and press a steel pipe between gaps to force their way out, even as a tooth of the bucket is damaged in the struggle. Donald responds by replacing the broken tooth with a flashy gold one and resumes digging at the tree with renewed vigor.
The chipmunks retaliate with a heavy boulder to disorient the operator and destroy the bucket’s remaining teeth with tar, buying them precious moments. Enraged, Donald captures the two and locks them inside his toolbox, then rams the tree with the now-toothless bucket. He climbs toward a final charge, but Chip and Dale manage a daring escape by using a saw and wrenches to dismantle the steam shovel.
Piece by piece, the machine falls apart as it careens down the hill, leaving only the driver’s seat with Donald in it. Donald crashes headlong into the tree and is left dazed, while the chipmunks roll home, taunting their stubborn foe. Undeterred, Donald schemes to blast them away with dynamite, placing several sticks around the tree and rushing off to set the plan in motion.
Chip and Dale outsmart him by repurposing the dynamite sticks as rungs on Donald’s ladder and propping it up against their tree. Dale fashions a fake explosion with a paper bag to draw Donald’s attention, who pursues him up the booby-trapped ladder as Chip re-lights the dynamite. Dale calmly tells Donald to stop, look, and listen, catching him off guard.
When Donald realizes he’s been tricked, he races off, dynamite in tow. The dynamite rungs explode in sequence, sending Donald higher and higher into the air. From a distance, the chipmunks watch with a mix of relief and humor as the fantasy finally ends, ending the day with a lighthearted moment and a shared laugh between friends.
