In a perilous chase, a Tsintaosaurus corners Junior. Speckles arrives just in time and defeats the rival, saving his son. He scolds Junior for not fighting back, reminding him that this world is dangerous and Speckles is all he has left. He promises that tomorrow will be Junior's first hunt.

Junior ends up in a desert dome where many other kidnapped dinosaurs are kept. A bully Therizinosaurus named Slash harasses him while Blue defends him, and a Carnotaurus named Blade orders Slash to stand down. The Deinonychus prisoners gather others and take three away from the dome.

Speckles meets Saichania Cy, who wants to avenge his friend captured by the same Deinonychus. Junior befriends Blue and meets a Monoclonius named Dusty. Speckles, Fang and Cy encounter a sand-dune shake that drops them into a dark pit, where they meet Fang, a female Tarbosaurus who heals Speckles' leg wound. It is revealed that Fang is Blue's mother, and she joins the trio on the quest for the compound.

Dsungaripterus Dsunga reveals that Deinonychus are delivering young dinosaurs as sacrifices to a mysterious volcano beast. The beast returns the young to its own offspring as toys, and when bored, it kills them. Junior feels guilty for not stopping the abductions.

The eruption intensifies as Speckles, Fang and Cy join the confrontation with the Deinonychus. Junior bravely distracts the giant iguana-like beast, allowing the others to pull back. The iguana is crushed by falling rocks, and Junior is knocked unconscious but survives the ordeal.

With the beast defeated and the eruption waning, the group escapes to a paradise-like refuge. Speckles apologizes for pressing Junior too hard, and they reaffirm their bond as father and son. Cy says goodbye as they begin a new life together.
